GIF or MP4 – which one should you pick?
On X, a “GIF” is really a short video that loops without sound. That is why you can have it both ways: as the original MP4, or converted to a real GIF file.

Our advice: keep the MP4 whenever the place you want to use it accepts videos – it is smaller and looks better. Choose GIF when only the GIF format works.
How the GIF is made
BestDownloader downloads a small version of the clip (a GIF never needs more than 480 pixels), lowers the frame rate to 10–15 images per second depending on the length, and builds a colour palette that fits exactly this clip. That two-step method gives much better-looking GIFs than a plain conversion.

Why is there no GIF option for my video?
The GIF option appears for clips of up to 30 seconds. A longer video – or one whose length X does not report – can only be saved as MP4.
Why is the GIF bigger and less sharp than on X?
X plays its GIFs as efficient videos. The GIF format is much older: every frame is stored as a picture with at most 256 colours, so files are larger and show less detail. The MP4 is the sharper copy.
Does the GIF loop and does it have sound?
It repeats forever, like on X. GIFs never contain sound.
