Two kinds of “GIFs” on Reddit
| What the post is | What you get |
|---|---|
| A real .gif file (a GIF picture) | The original GIF, byte for byte |
| A short video loop (v.redd.it) | MP4 with the best quality Reddit has – or, for up to 30 seconds, a converted GIF |
| A GIF from another site (Imgur, Gfycat …) | Not supported: only media hosted by Reddit itself can be saved |
Reddit shows many “GIFs” as muted video loops, because they are smaller and sharper than real GIFs. The MP4 keeps that quality; choose the GIF only when you need the .gif format.
Reddit videos with sound
Videos that have sound are saved with the sound merged in – Reddit stores picture and audio separately, which is why many tools produce silent files. See the Reddit video downloader for the details.

Frequently asked questions
How do I download a GIF from Reddit?
Copy the post link, paste it above and download. A real GIF post is saved as the original .gif; for a video loop pick MP4 or GIF.
Why is there no GIF button on my video?
GIF conversion is offered for clips of up to 30 seconds. Longer videos can be saved as MP4.
Does the converted GIF look worse than on Reddit?
A little: GIF is limited to 256 colours (we use 128 plus dithering) and we cap the size at 480 pixels. The MP4 is the sharper copy.
Can I download GIFs from NSFW or private subreddits?
Only content that is visible without a login. Anything that needs an account – including many NSFW posts – cannot be downloaded.
